Scale A8

Cyprus Government Exams for Scale A8 (A8-A10-A11)

The exam for positions whose initial scale does not exceed A8 concerns graduate entry positions — Officer roles across ministries, departments and wider-public-sector organisations, typically progressing along the combined A8-A10-A11 scales.

It is the second exam of each autumn cycle and, relative to available positions, the most competitive: most candidates are graduates with strong academic records, so the difference is made by speed and consistency under time pressure.

Exam structure

The exam consists of two parts, both multiple-choice:

PartWhat it measuresDuration
Part 1 — Verbal AbilityReading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, logical conclusions40 minutes
Part 2 — Abstract/Deductive and Quantitative AbilityPatterns and diagrammatic logic, deductive reasoning, practical arithmetic and data analysis50 minutes

What makes Part 2 demanding

The second part combines three reasoning types in a single timed section: abstract (patterns in shapes and symbols), deductive (logical reasoning), and quantitative (arithmetic problems, tables, charts). Switching between different modes of thinking within the same 50 minutes is what most candidates find hard — and what improves most dramatically with mixed practice.

How to prepare

  • Practise all four reasoning types separately first, then in mixed timed tests that mimic Part 2.
  • Don't leave Abstract for last: it is the type that improves most through familiarity with the patterns.
  • In Quantitative, work on reading tables and charts — most questions are data interpretation, not advanced mathematics.
  • Track per-section statistics so you know where to invest your study time.

Frequently asked questions

Which positions does the up-to-A8 exam cover?

Graduate entry positions — as a rule, Officer roles in ministries, departments and organisations, with salary progression along the combined A8-A10-A11 scales.

Do I need subject knowledge for the position?

Not in this exam — it assesses general abilities (verbal, abstract/deductive, quantitative). Position-specific knowledge may be tested later, in a Special Written Examination or interview for a specific announcement.

Does the A8 certificate also cover A9–A11 positions?

No — positions with an initial scale of A9–A11 have a separate exam, with an additional assessment of work scenarios. It requires a separate application and participation.
