Scales A9–A11

Cyprus Government Exams for Scales A9–A11

The exam for positions whose initial scale is A9 or A11 concerns senior scientific and administrative entry positions. It closes the annual cycle of the recruitment exams, usually in December.

What sets it apart from the A7 and A8 exams is the assessment of situations and work scenarios: multiple-choice questions based on realistic workplace situations, measuring judgement and administrative maturity — not just reasoning speed.

What is tested

The exam combines the general reasoning abilities with one additional, distinct component:

  • Reasoning abilities: verbal, abstract/deductive and quantitative ability, as in the other scales.
  • Work scenarios: assessment of situations through realistic multiple-choice workplace scenarios.

What the work scenarios measure

According to the Examinations Service syllabus, the scenarios assess aspects such as:

  • Administrative ability and decision-making.
  • Supervision of staff and work.
  • Organisational ability and prioritisation.
  • Professional conduct and handling sensitive situations.

How to prepare

For the abilities component, the same applies as for the other scales: systematic, timed practice across the four reasoning types. For the work scenarios, the best preparation is familiarity with their logic: in each scenario, look for the option that balances following procedure, effectiveness and professional conduct — the “extreme” options (complete inaction or overstepping authority) are rarely correct.

Frequently asked questions

How does the A9–A11 exam differ from A8?

Beyond the reasoning abilities, it includes an assessment of situations and work scenarios — judgement questions on realistic workplace situations. It requires a separate application and grants a separate certificate of success.

Is there a “right” answer in the work scenarios?

Yes — the questions are multiple-choice with predetermined correct answers, based on principles of administration, supervision and professional conduct in the public service.

How much does each component count towards the score?

The weighting is set in each cycle's official announcement. The general rule always applies: at least 50% overall and 40% in each part to pass.
